Sustainable by nature

Bristol is green in more ways than one. Large parks, zero waste shops and a pledge to be carbon neutral by 2030 are only the start of what the city has to offer.

Green spaces

Bristol is the 3rd greenest city in the UK, 2021.

In the city centre you'll find parks, trees and greenery among the busy streets. Only two minutes from Cabot Circus shopping centre is the popular Castle Park, where you can enjoy views over the river and take a break from the hustle and bustle.

In Clifton, you can head to the rolling green fields of the Downs on one side of the Avon Gorge. On the other, there's miles of woodland to explore in Leigh Woods. Walk to either from campus to experience the countryside in an otherwise lively city. And if you do visit Avon Gorge, be sure to look out for the gorge goats!

Zero waste

Trying to do your bit for the planet? Reducing single use plastics is easy with so many zero waste shops on your doorstep.

Climate-friendly products are readily available. You can source sustainable groceries and household products with ease or look for a pre-loved bargain at one of Bristol’s many secondhand stores.

Plus, many of our local coffee shops have made the switch to compostable packaging to help you reduce your carbon footprint on the go – and many offer a discount for using a reusable cup.

Bristol's commitment to the climate

The Bristol One City Approach is a coalition of key organisations across Bristol. It ensures leadership of the city is collaborative, inclusive and innovative.

In 2020 Bristol One City launched their strategy to make Bristol carbon neutral by 2030. As part of the One City scheme, the University of Bristol has also committed to this goal.

As of 2023, a Clean Air Zone has come into force in Bristol, limiting the number of high-pollution vehicles in the city centre. This is just one example of how we’re working towards our net zero goal.

Being less reliant on cars is made easier by Bristol’s extensive network of bike lanes. Bristol became England’s first Cycling City in 2008, and the city is becoming more bike friendly all the time.

Many of our local businesses reflect the city’s commitment to sustainability. Explore some of Bristol’s greenest companies here:
